Support for early years children with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
Getting an EHCP
Most children with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) will have their additional needs met in their setting with resources that are ordinarily available - Early Years Ordinarily Available Provision [PDF 674KB]. Settings, parents or other professionals can request an Education Health and Care (EHC) Needs Assessment if needed. The Local Authority (LA) needs evidence of how your child’s needs are being supported.
Please speak with the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) at your child’s early years setting for further guidance. The process prior to requesting an EHC Needs Assessment can take place at your child’s early years setting.
Reviewing your child's EHCP
Children aged 0 to 5 years, should have their EHCP reviewed at least every 6 months. The review should:
- include you, your child (where possible), your child’s setting and any professionals involved
- celebrate all the progress your child has made
- consider what needs to happen in the next 6 months in terms of your child’s learning and their support
These review meetings also allow you to discuss the budget attached to the plan, and to request any changes you may want to make.
