Support available to help young people travel for education, learning and training

Young people in Westmorland and Furness will again this year receive support to access education and training. We know that transport plays a vital role in providing access to education and skills, particularly in rural locations. The 16-19 Education Travel Bursary programme will open again to new applicants from GCSE results day on 21 August.

Councils welcome next steps on devolution

Westmorland and Furness and Cumberland Councils today welcomed the news Cumbria has passed statutory devolution tests set by the Government and will now be allowed to progress to the next stage of the devolution process.

Following a formal recruitment process, in conjunction with the Ministry of Justice and the Chief Coroner for England and Wales, Ms Kirsty Gomersal has been appointed as the new HM Senior Coroner for the Cumbria area.

First stage completed in £350,000 major school decarbonisation review

Westmorland and Furness Council was awarded £350,000 to carry out a major decarbonisation assessment across schools for which the council has responsibility. This followed the successful application for a Low Carbon Skills Fund (LCSF) grant from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
