In December 2023, we introduced an application process to make it easier for communities to request 20mph speed limits.
We've since received a number of suggestions for speed limit schemes, covering 79 locations in Westmorland and Furness. We're progressing scheme proposals over a three year period, which will end in 2027.

Criteria for successful 20mph proposals
Proposed schemes under consultation
The Eden, Furness and South Lakeland Locality Boards have approved a further 24 'community backed' 20mph schemes. We've prioritised these schemes for delivery in 2025 to 2026.
We're now inviting you to share your views on the proposed introduction of 20mph speed limits across these 24 communities.
Have your say
This is your chance to have your say on the introduction of lower speed limits and to shape designs for the schemes. The schemes will only be introduced if we can demonstrate that we've received further support from the community, so it's essential that we hear your views.
Consultation dates
The consultation opened on Wednesday 4 June 2025. It will close on Friday 18 July 2025.

What happens next
We'll analyse and consider the feedback gathered during the consultation. We'll make changes to the proposal designs after this, if necessary.
The final design of a 20mph speed limit will then be subject to a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO).
We're legally required to hold a 21-day statutory consultation and advertisement. We'll advertise the TRO through:
- local newspaper notices
- street notices
- our website
Residents, businesses and the emergency services will be able to respond to the TRO in writing, by post or email. The TRO notice will list the details to do this.
Our Locality Boards in Eden, Furness and South Lakeland will consider any objections to the TRO. This will be in line with relevant regulations. They will then make their decision on approval of the schemes, taking into account the objections received.
