A595 Grizebeck improvement

This project aims to help boost economic growth in the area by creating a resilient route that will support the safe and reliable movement of goods and people into, around, and out of Barrow-in-Furness.

Road safety and access to local communities such as Grizebeck Village will benefit.

Project details

The A595 Grizebeck improvement scheme is a 1.4 kilometre single carriageway road between Chapels and Grizebeck on the A595 north of Barrow.

We have been awarded £23.31 million toward the scheme by the Department for Transport.

The route runs to the east of the existing A595, past properties at Dove Bank and Dove Ford Farm, before crossing the existing A595 and then forming a new junction with the A595/A5092 to the west of the existing junction.

Story Contracting Limited are the lead contractor and works have now begun on site.

A595 Grizebeck Bridge (October 2025)

The new bridge at Grizebeck will offer residents and agricultural vehicles safe and reliable access to the village and the surrounding farmland. This is an important milestone in our improvement scheme. Story Contracting are putting the final touches to the bridge and we anticipate that it will be opened in November 2025.

Our timelapse video shows lots of footage of the bridge works, taken at different times. They have been put together to show how the bridge works have progressed.

A595 Flyover (January 2026)

We've produced a 'before and after' video to show the progress we've made on the flyover at Grizebeck between September 2024 and January 2026, thanks to Story Contracting.

The video shows 2024 footage and 2026 footage side by side at the same time, to make it easier to compare.

Road closures and restrictions

The C5013, (known as the ‘Mousetrap’), is a narrow route with few passing places. To ensure the safety of the site operatives and general road users, this road is now closed.

HGVs over 7.5 tonnes will be restricted from travelling on the A595 between Grizebeck and School Road in Kirkby‑in‑Furness for the duration of the construction works.

HGV access will be permitted for local businesses and residents. Access for site operations, emergency services, and buses will continue to operate normally.

A 20mph speed limit between Bank End and Grizebeck Filling Station to support works on the new junction.

Buckhorn Lane will close from 23 February 2026 until 1 July 2026. This restriction will allow allow for the contractor to start works on the new entrance on the Chapels side of Buckhorn Lane. Please note that residents will continue to have access from the north via the A5092.

Temporary convoy working will be in place along the A595/A5092 from 29 June until 3 July. This will involve traffic being held and then escorted through the works area in single file. These measures are necessary to allow contractors to safely complete resurfacing works without requiring further full road closures between the filling station and Bank End.

The final activity required before the road can be opened is the connection of the new road to the existing A595 at Chapels. To safely carry out these works, a full road closure will be in place from the evening of Friday 17 July to the evening of Sunday 19 July.

Scheme update, June 2026

Works have continued to progress well in recent months, with several key milestones achieved across the scheme.

A major highlight was the opening of the accommodation bridge in October 2025, marking an important step forward for the project.

At Chapels, works are ongoing around the pond. The majority of kerb installation is now complete, and resurfacing through the village has recently been carried out. Final tie-ins to the new road are scheduled for July, representing the last activity in this area ahead of the road opening.

Further north at Pen Hill, slope and hand brushing activities have now been completed. Rock protocol inspections have also been agreed with the Technical Approval Authority.

Drainage installation continues to advance, with the majority of works now complete.

Significant progress has also been made at the new farm underpass, where construction of the concrete track is currently underway.

Upcoming Works

Over the coming period, works will focus on progressing key areas across the scheme:

  • Chapels Junction: Ongoing kerbing and footway works, improvements at the village junction and a new footway between Chapels and Kirkby will also begin
  • Pen Hill: Continued shaping and finishing of drainage channels
  • Farm Underpass: East ramp works will progress, alongside landscaping and fencing installation
  • Ellemire Bridge: Completion of stone works, followed by earth shaping and topsoiling
  • Site-wide works: Hydroseeding will start, alongside continued fencing, road surfacing (binder course), safety barrier installation, and surfacing works at Ellemire Junction
