Additional Highways Maintenance Funding: Network North

We have received a total of £2.347m in 2023 to 2024 and £2.347m in 2024 to 2025 for local road resurfacing and wider maintenance activity on the local highway network from Government’s Network North Road Resurfacing Fund

We are scheduled to receive an additional £156.777m between now and 2033/34.

This money will be spent on resurfacing roads, cycleways and footways and maintaining bridges and street lighting, as well as preventing potholes and other road defects.

We have prioritised work based on the condition of the road and used annual condition surveys of the highway network, while considering other local factors such as:

  • road importance
  • number of reported defects
  • number of customer complaints

Innovation in the delivery of highways maintenance

We continue to be at the forefront of innovation in highways maintenance. Our digital inspections process and customer reporting tool ensures that we can accurately identify and record the condition of our highways assets and prioritise any necessary repairs.

We will continue to adopt and develop new innovative and sustainable solutions to ensure that this additional funding will assist us in reducing our maintenance backlog.

We continue to trial and use new products such as warm asphalt and insitu recycled materials whilst at the same time using new equipment such as spray patching, surface dressing and other preventative treatments along with use of thermal patchers and pot hole pros.

Coordination of roadworks

We will work closely with all utility companies to ensure that a forward plan of all highways schemes is shared via multiple communication channels.

These channels will include but not limited to Permits (statutory s.58 Process) in Street Manager, Quarterly Co-ordination Meetings and email notifications to the Utility forward planning teams.

All roadworks will be carefully planned and managed by Westmorland and Furness Council with the aim of minimising disruption to the travelling public and to prevent the need for any Utility to excavate in the newly resurfaced road(s).

To ensure the public and local businesses are kept fully informed All planned and emergency roadworks will be published on our website and One Network.
