Tips for bonding with your baby
Fathers do not always feel an instant connection with their new baby. It is perfectly normal for it to take considerable time for this feeling to develop. Sometimes it can be hard to find the time or know how to bond with your new baby but try these techniques and your relationship will grow and strengthen. Remember, you do not need any expensive toys: you are the most fascinating thing in the world to your child!
If you are still finding this difficult, please consult the resources on our Parenting support resources page or contact your local Best Start Family Hub for free, friendly and non-judgemental advice.
- Cuddle your baby and talk or sing to them – they won’t care how good your singing voice is
- Have fun making eye contact by playing peek-a-boo. Pull silly faces, make lots of eye contact and smile at them
- Learn new nursery rhymes and include some numbers
- Play with water in the bath or sink - exploring new toys and splashing
- Enjoy skin to skin contact, get comfy and place your baby on your bare chest in just a nappy. Hold your baby close and cover with a blanket to keep them warm. This releases oxytocin, a hormone that promotes attachment and bonding
- Use a sling to carry your baby, which benefits them due to the close contact between you both. This will help to soothe them, as they will feel safe and secure. This feeling also helps their brain grow and develop.
