Children and young people with medical needs

Support and resources for children and young people with medical needs

Schools and settings are expected to plan to help your child manage their condition and overcome any potential barriers to getting the most from their education.

This support includes:

  • understanding the impact medical needs can have on your child
  • providing strategies to meet your child's needs.

A medical need is not necessarily a special educational need and/or disability (SEND).

Schools and settings should ensure they have read the medical needs policy and Supporting Pupils With Medical Conditions at School.

What you can do

As a parent, you should provide your child’s school or setting with sufficient and up to date information about their medical needs.

This may also include:

  • notifying the school or setting, in the first instance, that your child has medical needs
  • cooperating with the school or setting to support your child

You and your child should be involved in making decisions about their education and any changes before any new provision begins.

Home and hospital tuition

The Home and Hospital Tuition Team is run by the Pupil Referral Service and we use premises in Barrow-in-Furness and Kendal.

Local Authorities (LA) must provide suitable education for children and young people who are unable to attend school because of their medical needs.

The LA has a multi-agency panel which considers referrals, from schools, for children and young people with medical needs. The panel meets every 3 weeks during term time.

Schools are told the outcomes as soon possible after the panel meeting. They will liaise with you about your child.

Home and hospital tuition teaching centre

There is one home and hospital tuition teaching centre in the area.

The South Cumbria Pupil Referral Service runs the team - they have 2 teaching bases in Barrow-in-Furness and Kendal.
