Choosing a school for children with SEND

Specialist resourced provision

Specialist Resource Provision is a special program that helps children and young people with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) in mainstream schools. The program gives children and young people extra help and support, so they succeed in school and in social situations.

Specialist Resource Provision helps everyone in the class to learn together. Children and young people with SEND get equal access to education and have the appropriate support to reach their full potential.

How they work

A Specialist Resource Provision is not always in a separate building with a unique identity. There may be lots of places that can offer opportunities for children and young people to join activities and to learn with their peers.

The time children and young people spend in regular classes depends on their individual needs. For some, short amounts of time on a specific activity with support may be appropriate. Others may benefit from participating in one or more areas of the curriculum for increasing periods of time. Children and young people will have access to different resources. Some of the things offered may include:

  • small group teaching
  • speech therapy
  • mainstream experiences

Schools receive extra funding to provide specialist support for children and young people that need it.

Getting a place

Places in Specialist Resource Provisions are for children and young people with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
