Dental health 11+

Top tips around dental health to share with your teens.

As children enter their teenage years, they begin to take more responsibility for their own routines - including dental care. But with busy schedules, braces, and the lure of sugary snacks, it’s easy for good habits to slip. Supporting your teen to maintain strong dental health now can prevent problems later and set them up for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Why dental health matters

Teens are still growing, and their adult teeth need care and protection. Poor oral hygiene can lead to cavities, gum disease, bad breath and even impact self-confidence. Hormonal changes during puberty can also make gums more sensitive and prone to inflammation, so regular brushing and check-ups are especially important.

Top tips to share with your teen

Here are some practical ways to help your child take charge of their dental health:

  • brush teeth twice a day for two minutes using fluoride toothpaste
  • floss or use interdental brushes daily to clean between teeth
  • avoid brushing too hard - gentle circular motions are best
  • limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals
  • drink water throughout the day to help rinse away food and bacteria
  • chew sugar-free gum after meals to boost saliva and protect enamel
  • change toothbrushes every 3 months or sooner if bristles are worn
  • attend regular dental check-ups, even if teeth feel fine
  • if wearing braces, follow the orthodontist’s cleaning advice carefully
  • don’t ignore bleeding gums - it could be a sign of gum disease

Building independence

Encourage your teen to take ownership of their dental routine. Let them choose their own toothbrush or toothpaste flavour, set reminders if needed, and talk openly about why oral health matters. Avoid nagging - positive reinforcement works better than criticism.
