Housing support for kinship carers

If a child moves in with you, you may need more space in your home. This page explains what housing support may be available and how to apply for it.

Apply for social housing

Cumbria Choice is the service that manages applications for social housing across Cumbria. You can use one application to apply for homes from different housing providers.

You may get priority for housing

Your application will be assessed under the Cumbria Choice housing policy.

Some kinship carers may get higher priority if:

  • they are approved foster carers
  • they need a larger home so a child can live with them
  • their current home is overcrowded
  • they or a child in their care have health or welfare needs linked to their housing situation

How to apply

  1. Register an account on the Cumbria Choice website.
  2. Check your email for your registration details and reference number.
  3. Log in and complete the online social housing application form.
  4. When your application has been assessed, you will receive a letter telling you your priority band and what happens next.
  5. Search for available properties and place bids on homes you are eligible for.
  6. You can log in at any time to:
  • check your position in the queue
  • view your bid history
  • withdraw a bid

If you need help with your application

Speak to your social worker if you have one.

You can also contact the kinship care team:
Email: SGOsupport@cumbria.gov.uk

In some situations, face-to-face support may be available to help you complete your application.

If you are homeless or at risk of homelessness

You should contact us as soon as possible if:

  • you have nowhere to live
  • you are at risk of losing your home
  • your home is no longer suitable for your family

If you are caring for children, you may have priority for housing support.

We can help you:

  • stay in your current home if possible
  • find somewhere else to live
  • access temporary accommodation if needed
