Developmental Language Disorder - useful terms explained

Language is not just about speaking but also about listening, reading and writing.​

Language Disorder: When there is a difficulty with using and understanding language which is not related to another condition.

Speech Disorder: When your child doesn't develop their ability to make speech appropriately.

Language Delay: When language develops slower.

Language can be:

Expressive language: This is how your child uses words, gestures and signs.

Receptive language: How your child makes sense of what the hear.

Speech: Is the way your child says sounds and words.

Articulation: How your child makes sounds using their lips, palate and voice.

Fluency: This is the smoothness/flow of how sounds are made.

Grammar: This includes the rules for forming words, phrases and sentences.

Vocabulary: This is the words your child can use and understand when they are speaking, reading and writing.

Non-verbal: This type of communication is how your child understands gestures, body language, facial expression and eye contact.
