English as an Additional Language (EAL) team
Over 70 languages are currently spoken by pupils in our schools and settings.
The EAL team
The EAL team is part of the Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) Specialist Teaching Service, and we provide support/advice to families, children and young people and educational providers.
What we do
The EAL team aims to improve the learning for children and young people who are accessing the curriculum whilst learning English. This may be at an individual level or working on wider issues with schools and settings.
We work with children and young people from 4 to 16 years who:
- are new to English
- who are more advanced bilingual learners, having difficulties in specific areas of language.
We also work with other professionals who might be involved with your child.
The services we offer
We offer a range of services, including:
- support and training for staff
- providing write ups of school visits
- signposting to/providing appropriate resources
- assessing English levels
- offering advice on cultural issues
- identifying any potential SEND
Accessing the EAL Team
Not all children learning English as an Additional Language will need to access the service. Your child’s school may ask your permission to contact the team. The team will work with you to plan and review the support for your child.
If you think it would be helpful for the service to be involved with your child, talk to your child’s teacher, Head of Year or Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo).
